Establishing the coaching agreement

Transparency is one of the most important building blocks of trust.  Unless we get some answers to the What, Why, How, Who, When and Where of any endeavor, we feel doubtful, fearful and hesitating to do it. But with more clarity we become more committed to achieve it.

Denise Morrison says “The single most important ingredient in the recipe for success is transparency because transparency builds trust.”

That’s why establishing a coaching agreement is crucial. It gives clients more clarity about the coaching role, process and foreseeable outcome.

Many people have heard about the importance of coaching in changing people’s lives. But when thinking of it, they might get in mind the image of a football coach standing on the sideline instructing his team; or of a powerful motivational speaker showing people how to become successful; or of a consultant laying down some growth goals and plans…but coaching is none of that and yet these images may color there judgement and determine their expectations.

A part of a coaching job is to educate clients on the essence of coaching and on what they should expect and aspire to get away with.

Other details are so important either such as:

  • The time commitment outline (How many times per week to meet? When? For how long?)
  • The coaching procedure
  • The cancellation policy
  • The packages and their respective fees, etc.

Some might find it challenging to find their way through all these kind of legal stuff but can we afford not to do it? Can we afford for example to take a long journey without checking beforehand our car motor oil, radiator coolant level and tires air pressure? I guess no, because that is what will make the journey safer and therefore more enjoyable and successful
